Unbeknown to Dawn, her grandfather has shot an old swan out of mercy. In their coastal Alaskan town, her father buys the swan pelt, preventing her Uncle Alex, a fur trader, from selling it for export. Dawn’s father surprises her part-Aleut mother with a hat she helped to make and also with an idea to catch poachers. Shooting swans has become illegal but Alaska is a territory and Prohibition occupies the Sheriff.

Dawn and her mother become involved with suspicious inquiries about the swan bonnet besides its haunting effect. Because Dawn’s grandparents see the swans first, Dawn agrees to secretly watch the migration with the deputy sheriff’s son. But after she and her mother encounter women from a ship and find out about a hunting party, they ride to the inlet. There are townspeople roving the shore too but who is the vigilante and who is the poacher?

I like this story a lot. It pulled me in from the first sentence and kept me reading as I followed the story of this family and their relationship with the swans that have become so important to them. Yet the swans were also hunted for their feathers, even though that was illegal. When the oldest swan's mate, named Sir swan by Grandma Glenda doesn't return one summer, his mate Bustle begins to decline. When she dies, her pelt is taken to a close family friend who sews a swan bonnet for Dawn's mother. When she wears it, oh does it ever cause a stir in the village. It's a time of change in the village and in Alaska as laws are made, towns and cities grow, and motorcars begin to appear. But for this particular family, it is a special time. This is a novel I will come back to again. Highly recommended for YA readers and their families.

The Swan Bonnet edition by Katherine L Holmes Children eBooks Reviews

I first encountered this book on authonomy.com and am glad that I had. I don't normally seek out Young Adult novels but this one held my interest. It is charming, engaging and important. Hat's off to its author. Recommended.
Beautiful characterizations and clear insights into frontier days in the Alaska of the Prohibition Era, this historical yarn has much to recommend it. It’s a well spun flashback to a nostalgic time when life was simpler.

It’s also a coming-of –age story with Dawn, a young girl, coming to grips with new surroundings and with an array of interesting characters who enter her life. For this reason I’d especially recommend it as a young adult read. That said, readers of all ages will enjoy it.
This story is told from the perspective of a young girl in Alaska during prohibition. The author does spend a good amount of time describing the everyday mundane small town life. I would recommend the book to young readers because the main characters are salt of the earth people with a strong moral code. They care about the land around them and desire to conserve resources which include protecting the migrating swans. I liked the author’s descriptions of the scenery. I could picture the inlet, port and the modest homes in the sea side hamlet. Character development is also solid. The plot does move slowly in the beginning but picks up near the end.
The Swan Bonnet, ISBN 9780991091102, Couchgrass Books, Paperback, 158 pages by Katherine L Holmes is a story set in a coastal Alaskan town in earlier days.
Reviewing this book perhaps erroneously but irrepressibly for this reader, elicits the analogy of critiquing a Grandma Moses painting among older more traditional pieces of art. It is a historical novel but more specifically it is an interesting character study of a particular type of people at a specific time in history.
Ostensibly the plot revolves around the effects of production and use of a hat fashioned from the pelt of a swan but includes allusions to mystical powers attributed to the pelt, attempted apprehension of illegal poachers and attempts at liquor prohibition. These parameters are somewhat divergent and a little awkward in combination but have been conjoined nicely to describe the citizens of the small town in their thought processes, politics and activities. Dawn and her acquaintances, her grandparents, her native mother, her part Russian uncle, the sheriff and his deputy, the wife of the large boat owner with her `parlor' all are naturally portrayed in episodes of associated activity and awkward conversation occurring among individuals who lead a more solitary existence. Although overly simplistic in part and not for everyone, many readers will find this nostalgic `study' of individuals in a time and place when life was both simple and complex but `closer to earth' most thought provoking and enjoyable.
